Squamish Community Forest Inaugural Timber Harvest to Begin
February 22, 2024
Dear community members,
We are excited to share that the Squamish Community Forest will be commencing our inaugural timber harvest the week of February 26, 2024. Roadbuilding for in-block roads will commence around February 21. After over a year of planning and outreach, this first harvest will take place in the Cheekye basin, as illustrated on this map.
A partnership between Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and the District of Squamish, the Squamish Community Forest’s mission is to sustain environmental and cultural values while providing social and economic benefits to its member communities for generations to come.
The Squamish Community Forest is located entirely within the Traditional Territory of Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). It spans 11,303 hectares on the hillsides east and south of the town of Squamish, including portions of the watersheds of Shannon Creek, Raffuse Creek, Stawamus River, Cheekye River, Mashiter Creek, Ring Creek and the lower Mamquam River.
Benefits of Community Forests include local level decision-making with a priority on local values, with economic benefits returned to the community.
Notice of logging truck traffic
Please note, as the Mamquam Ring Road is still closed, logging trucks will need to haul logs through Garibaldi Highlands. Hauling from the Cheekye basin will follow existing logging roads (Ring Creek North FSR – aka Northside Connector) – Garibaldi Park Road – upper Mamquam Road – Village Drive – University Boulevard – The Boulevard – Highlands Way South and Mamquam road to reach Hwy 99. Hauling is anticipated to begin in early March, with about 10-12 loaded trucks/day, Monday to Friday for about 8-9 weeks. Log hauling through the Highlands will be minimized during school drop off and pick up times.
